  The cost of apparel in seventeenth-century England, and the accuracy of Gregory King

  摘要：

  This article examines all the surviving probate accounts, from all Record offices except Preston and Lichfield, which deal with the expenses of childrens' clothing. There were over 800. Two-thirds of the accounts which formed the database were from decedants with under 100 pound of inventoried wealth. Poorer children from inventoried families were not unfamiliar with new clothes; 8,974 garments with individual prices were found, of which 967 were dated to 1660-1700, and these are compared with Gregory King's 'Table of Apparel' of 1688. This comparison suggests that King's prices of individual garments were in the right range, given that the probate data relate to miners' clothes, which used less fabric than adult clothing.
