  β,β-Diaryl α-halo carbonyl compounds are versatile building blocks and common targets in organic synthesis. Herein we present metal-, oxidant- and additive free a mild method to access such halo-functionalized building blocks in excellent selectivities via haliranium ion-triggered Friedel-Crafts-type alkylation with a broad range of chalcones and cinnamate esters in HFIP.
