A versatile and efficient halogen-promoted highlyregio- and stereoselective Friedel-Crafts (F-C) alkylation with alkenes has been developed with use of easily available and inexpensive NBS or I2 as the efficient halogen sources. Herein we present metal-, oxidant- and additive free a mild method to access such halo-functionalized building blocks in excellent selectivities via haliranium ion-triggered Friedel-Crafts-type alkylation with a broad range of chalcones and cinnamate esters in HFIP.
