A metal-free heterogeneous photoredox system is reported for hydrocarboxylation of alkenes. Boron carbonitride with abundant terminal B/N defects was employed as a photo transducer, permitting construction of sterically encumbered Lewis acid-base sites that are able to synergistically activate CO2 molecules under visible light.
