  Vicinal diol-containing monomers are prepared by reacting, in aqueous solution, a monomer of formula where R1 is H or CH3; Y is O or NH; R3 and R4 are each CH3 or C2H5; n is 2 or 3; X- is halogen-,½ SO4=, CH3SO4-, C2H3SO4- or CH3COO-; with at least one reactive vicinal diol -forming or -containing compound selected from glycidol and the 3-halo-1,2-propane- diols. Vicinal diol-containing polymers made from these monomers can be cross-linked to form high viscosity gels.
