    An electrophoretic particle includes a base particle (particle) that includes a first functional group, and a first compound and a second compound bonded to the base particle. The first compound is a polymer that includes a dispersion portion derived from a first monomer that contributes to dispersibility and a bonding portion derived from a second monomer including a second functional group having reactivity to the first functional group, and is connected to the base particle at the bonding portion. The second compound has a lower molecular weight than the first compound, includes a non-polar group and the second functional group, and is connected to the base particle at the second functional group.

  • Radical cascade-enabled synthesis of precision polymers with complex main-chain structures

    Radical cascade reactions enabling sequence-controlled ring-closing polymerization and ring-opening polymerization for the controlled synthesis of polymers with complex main-chain structures are provided. Facile syntheses leading to low-strain macrocyclic monomers consisting of the ring-opening triggers and extended main-chain structures are also provided. The present disclosure further provides methods for excellent control over polymer molecular weights and molecular weight distributions and high chain-end fidelity allows for the preparation of polymeric systems with well-defined architectures. Further provided are the general nature of the radical cascade-triggered transformations in polymer chemistry, and its application to the synthesis of polymers with diverse main-chain structural motifs with tailored functions. This abstract is intended as a scanning tool for purposes of searching in the particular art and is not intended to be limiting of the present disclosure.

    A method of manufacturing electrophoresis particles having base particles exposing first functional groups on surfaces and block copolymers bonded to the base particles, the method including: obtaining the plurality of block copolymers in which dispersion portions formed by polymerizing monomers including side chains contributing to dispersibility in a dispersion medium and bonding portions formed by polymerizing second monomers including second functional groups having reactivity with the first functional group are bonded, by living polymerization; and bonding the bonding portions to the base particles by reacting the first functional groups and the second functional groups so that the block copolymers are bonded to the base particles.

    There is provided a method of manufacturing an electrophoretic particle, in which the electrophoretic particle includes a mother particle and a block copolymer, including: a step of polymerizing a monomer M having a site contributing to dispersibility into a dispersion medium, a monomer M including a second functional group having reactivity with the first functional group, a charged monomer M by living polymerization without random copolymerizing the monomer M 1 and the monomer M 2 so as to obtain the block copolymer; and a step of reacting the first functional group and the second functional group to a bonding section to a mother particle so as to connect the block copolymer to the mother particle.
