    Incompleteness of Wastewater Dechlorination
    摘要:
    Dechlorination by sulfur dioxide or other S(IV) compounds is employed to protect aquatic wildlife from toxic residual chlorine in wastewater treatment plant effluents. Tests at two wastewater treatment plants show that dechlorination removes 87-98% of residual chlorine but that a remainder, which exceeds regulatory limits, is very slowly reduced. Judging from kinetic evidence, chlorinated secondary organic amines and peptides probably contribute to S(IV)-resistant residual chlorine. Most of the S(IV)-resistant fraction is extractable into octanol. Its hydrophobic character suggests that this fraction may be harmful to organisms in receiving streams. S(IV)-resistant residual chlorine has been overlooked previously because the dechlorinating agent interferes with standard analytical methods for total chlorine.

    The present invention provides for novel acridine-like class of compounds that have demonstrated efficiency in treating cancer. The compounds of the present invention have demonstrated efficacy in binding to and antagonizing the activity of the p53 repressor, HDMX. Once administered to a cell, the compounds of the present invention bind HDMX, thereby allowing p53 to induce apoptosis of the cancerous cell. A combination of this class of compounds along with Nutlin3 provides a novel approach to treat cancers.

    The invention relates to a process for the diastereoisomeric resolution of 5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid; it discloses also a crystalline amine salt of 5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid and is further directed to a process for the transformation of the single diastereoisomers of the 5-methyltetrahydrofolic amine salts obtained by the process of the invention into the corresponding free acid or into an alkaline earth metal salt. The invention provides a simple, economically advantageous and efficient process and allows to obtain stable and pure (6R) and ( 6S) -diastereoisomers of 5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid in a good yield and diastereoisomeric purity.

    A bisazo compound of the following formula: wherein R¹ and R³ are each hydrogen or alkyl; D is phenylene or naphthylene; one of X¹ and X² is NH₂ and the other is OH; Z¹ and Z² are each -CH=CH₂ or -CH=CH₂Z' in which Z' is a splittable group; B is monosulfophenylene, monosulfophenylene-methylene or mono- or disulfonaphthylene-methylene; U is phenylene or an aliphatic bridging group; and J is an amono-derivative group or, J may be alkoxy when X¹ is OH and U is phenylene, and J may be alkoxy or phenoxy when X¹ is OH and U is the aliphatic bridging group. This compound is useful for dyeing or printing fiber materials and gives a dyed or printed product having a color superior in various fastness properties with superior build-up property.
