Abstract : Thermolysis of hexakis(2,6-diethylphenyl)cyclotristannane in xylenes at 200 C provides blue violet, crystalline 2,2,4,4,5,5-hexakis(2,6- diethylphenyl)pentastanna(1.1.1)propellane, 1, in 13% yield and hexakis(2,6- diethylphenyl)distannane, 2, after purification by column chromatography. [Fe2(CO)6(µ-CO)(µ-dppm)][dppm = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)methane] rapidly and almost quantitatively. Full crystal and molecular structural data are reported for [Fe2(CO)8(µ-SnR12)] and [Fe2(CO)8(µ-SnR22)]. Mössbauer data are also presented for compounds 1–3, and interpreted in terms of the structural data for these and other systems.

Chemical reduction of hexakis(2,6-diethylphenyl)cyclotristannane (2) with 2.3 equiv of lithium metal in THF provides hexakis(2,6-diethylphenyl)pentastanna[1.1.1]propellane (1) (31% yield) and octakis(2,6-diethylphenyl)tetracyclo-[4.1.0.0 1,5 .0 2,6 ]- heptastannane (4) (∼1% yield). With 1.2 equiv of lithium metal, the same procedure provides 1,2,2,3,3,4,4-heptakis(2,6-diethylphenyl)cyclotetrastannane (3)
