Polymeric compositions that include polyurethane polymers derived from a polyisocyanate compound and a polyactive hydrogen compound. The polyurethane compound is at least partially endcapped with a group including at least one antimicrobial quaternary ammonium compound. The polymeric composition of the present invention is capable of forming a self-supporting film. The polymeric compositions are suitable for coating substrates to effectively kill or prevent the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria, mold, mildew, algae fungi and the like. The polymeric compositions are particularly useful for protecting construction materials used in moist, outdoor environments to prevent discoloration or decay from microorganisms and for surfaces in health care facilities to mitigate the spread of pathogens.

Antimicrobial foams and methods of making same. The antimicrobial foams can include a polymeric foam having a wet-out time of at least 250 sec; and a coating comprising an antimicrobial material. The antimicrobial material can include a quaternary ammonium compound, and the antimicrobial material can be covalently bound to the foam. The antimicrobial foam can include at least 0.25 parts by weight of quarternary ammonium compound per 100 parts by dry weight of the foam. The method can include providing the polymeric foam and an antimicrobial material comprising a quaternary ammonium precursor. The method can further include combining the foam and the quaternary ammonium precursor to form a combination; and heating the combination to a temperature of at least 40 °C to form an antimicrobial foam comprising a quaternary ammonium compound covalently bound to the foam.
A multi-layer film for reducing microbial contamination on a surface. The multi-layer film can include a core layer having a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface, an adhesive layer disposed adjacent the first surface of the core layer, and an antimicrobial layer disposed adjacent the second surface. The antimicrobial layer can include a cross-linked matrix and an antimicrobial agent dispersed within the cross-linked matrix, where the cross-linked matrix is derived from a polymerizable precursor comprising a material selected from the group consisting of a polymerizable monomer, a polymerizable polymer having a molecular weight of about 1,000 or less, and combinations thereof.

Novel photosensitive compositions based on azlactone derived polymers are described. The polymers have a hydrocarbyl backbone and pendant peptide groups with free-radically polymerizable functionality attached thereto, said polymer further comprising at least one oxyacid group or salt thereof, and optionally quaternary ammonium salt groups. A high speed durable printing plate having a mild pH aqueous developability is disclosed which incorporates these polymers in combination with a photoinitiator. The polymers are also useful as proofing films in graphic arts applications.
