    There is a process disclosed for alkylating the nucleus of a phenol, said process comprising reacting an α,ω alkanediol containing from 3 to 8 carbon atoms with a phenol having an unsubstituted nuclear position para to the phenolic hydroxyl group; said phenol being selected from the group of alkylated phenols having tertiary alkyl groups of 4 to 8 carbon atoms in both positions ortho to the phenolic hydroxyl group, in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide or alkoxide or alkali metal at a temperature from 200 to 300° C while continuously removing the water by-product as it forms and obtaining as a product said phenol having a primary hydroxy terminated alkyl group of 3 to 8 carbon atoms in said para position.

    Provided is a liquid crystal composition that contains a polymerizable compound and is used for producing a PSA- or PSVA-type liquid crystal display element that has excellent response performance and a satisfactory pretilt angle and that contains less residual monomers, in which issues such as alignment defects and display defects caused by a low voltage holding ratio (VHR) or the like do not occur or rarely occur. Also provided is a liquid crystal display element that uses the liquid crystal composition. The liquid crystal composition according to the present invention is a liquid crystal composition that exhibits a sufficiently low viscosity (η), a sufficiently low rotational viscosity (γ1), and a large elastic modulus (K33) without decreasing the refractive index anisotropy (Δn) and the nematic phase-isotropic liquid phase transition temperature (Tni) and without increasing the solid phase-nematic phase transition temperature (Tcn). The liquid crystal display element that uses this liquid crystal composition satisfactorily obtains a pretilt angle and has a high voltage holding ratio (VHR) and high-speed response. Thus, a liquid crystal display element that has no or less alignment defects and display defects such as image sticking, and has high display quality and high response speed is obtained.

    The present invention relates to a liquid crystal composition, which is a liquid crystal composition containing a compound represented by General Formula (II-1) as an anti-oxidizing agent for a liquid crystal composition containing the compound represented by General Formula (II-1) and also as a first component, and a compound represented by General Formula (K) as a second component. The compound represented by General Formula (II-1) enables obtainment of a working effect of the anti-oxidizing agent, and therefore it allows provision of a liquid crystal composition containing the anti-oxidizing agent which has improved reliability like low temperature stability, while the high dielectric anisotropy is maintained.

    The present invention relates to a nematic liquid crystal composition containing a polymerizable compound and having a negative dielectric anisotropy (Δε) and PSA or PSVA liquid crystal display element produced by using the same. The liquid crystal composition according to the present invention can provide PSA or PSVA liquid crystal display element, in which a sufficient pretilt angle is included, the amount of remaining monomer is small, there are no or almost no problems, e.g., alignment defects and display defects, arisen from a low voltage holding rate (VHR) and the like, and excellent response performance is exhibited. A liquid crystal display element using the liquid crystal composition according to the present invention is useful for an active-matrix-drive liquid crystal display element and can be applied to PSA, PSVA, and other liquid crystal display elements.
