  A compound of formula (I) wherein A5 is N, N(O) or N(S); E1 is(CR1R1)m1W1; G1 is N3,CN,OH,OR6a, NO2, or(CR1R1)m1W2; T1 isNR1W3, H,R3,R5, or a heterocycle; U1 is X1W6; J1 and J1a are independently R1, Br, Cl, F, I, CN, NO2 or N3; each J2 is independently H or R1; and the salts, solvates, resolved enantiomers and purified diastereomers thereof. The compounds generally comprise an acidic group, a basic group, a substituted amino or N-acyl and a group having an optionally hydroxylated alkane moiety. Parmaceutical compositions comprising the inhibitors of the invention are also described. Method of inhibiting neuraminidase in samples suspected of containing neuraminidase are also described.
