A potentmodular two-step approach to naphthyridine-based polyaromatic compounds was achieved through gold catalysis followed by acid-mediated condensation and in situ desulfonation. Besides the halochromic behaviour of all synthesised π-extended systems, one example shows outstanding sensitivity in detecting protons in non-protic solvents and allows a quantitative analysis in the low μm area.
