  This invention is directed to diphenyl ethers having in the 3' position a radical of the formula: ##STR1## The products are prepared by reacting a 3'-halocarbonyl compound with an appropriate substituted hydroxyl amine. These compounds and their agronomically acceptable salts and compositions containing these compounds as active ingredients are selective herbicides.
