A method for synthesizing halogenated organic compounds, such as halogenated alkenyl group-containing and halogenated alkyl group-containing compounds having a heteroatom (e.g., O,N.S) coupled to a carbon atom of a halogenated alkenyl or halogenated alkyl group, involves reacting a halogenated olefin such as a chloro-substituted trifluoropropenyl compound with an active hydrogen-containing organic compound such as an alcohol (e.g., an aliphatic monoalcohol, aliphatic polyalcohol, or a phenolic compound), a primary amine, a secondary amine or a thiol.

In this study, we report that selective aerobic oxidation of allyl phenyl ethers is attained by a Pd catalyst/polyoxometalate hybrid system to yield corresponding methyl ketones in water-enriched acetonitrile. The Pd(OAc)2/H5PV2Mo10O40 system exhibits higher conversions and yields of corresponding methyl ketone by Wacker-type oxidation of allyl phenyl ether as compared with the conventional PdCl2/CuCl2

Gypsum board with a fluorine-containing antifungal agent

A novel gypsum board having improved antifungal properties is disclosed. The board comprises a gypsum core, front and back paper facings, and a polymeric antifungal agent effective at inhibiting fungal growth. A preferred polymeric antifungal agent is polyDADMAC or polyTMMC. The novel gypsum board further comprises a non-polymeric antifungal agent comprising a fluorine-containing quaternary ammonium compound. Preferred non-polymeric ammonium compounds include Tetra-n-butylammonium fluoride and Tetraethylammonium fluoride. The polymeric antifungal agent can be present in the gypsum core and/or on one or both of the paper facings. The non-polymeric antifungal agent may be encapsulated in a material or ionically associated with the polymeric antifungal agent to allow releases of the non-polymeric antifungal agent over time and/or upon exposure to moisture. Methods for preparing the aforementioned novel gypsum board are also disclosed.
Phase modulation of thermotropic liquid crystals of tetra-n-alkylammonium polyoxometalate ionic complexes

A series of composition analogous polyoxometalate-based ionic complexes are synthesized and studied, with a focus on the correlation between their mesomorphic behavior and their chemical structure. Generally, these polarizable rigid polyoxoanion clusters decorated with hydrophobic flexible alkyl chains have demonstrated a propensity to form thermotropic liquid-crystalline (LC) phases. Characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (PM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), two of the four investigated complexes tend to form thermodynamically stable mesophases. Longer alkyl chains have been found to form mesophases, and the alkyl chain length of the quaternary ammonium cations influences both the occurrence and type of mesophase exhibited.

Catalysis by polyoxometalates. Part 1.—Supported polyoxoanions of the Keggin structure: spectroscopic study (IR, Raman, UV) of solutions used for impregnation
Solutions of Keggin-structure polyoxometalates have been studied by IR, Raman and UV spectroscopies, with various solvents and counterions. For the tetraalkylammonium compounds, cationâanion aggregates are observed. This model of cationâanion aggregates can be applied to the solutions of the acids in DMF and DMSO. The different behaviour of the acids in water, acetonitrile and acetone can be explained in terms of anionâanion interactions, similar to those existing in the solid state. The results are discussed in connection with the use of polyoxometalate solutions for preparing supported catalysts by impregnation.
