An expeditious synthesis of unsymmetrical biaryls functionalized with electron-withdrawing or -donating substituents is described and illustrated by carbanion-induced ring transformation of 2H-pyran-2-one using acetyltrimethylsilane (ATMS) as a novel reagent in good yield.
