    A non-electric delay detonator adapted for field-assembly with a low energy detonating cord (21) has an expansion shell (10) into which the cord is inserted at the time of use. The pressure pulse resulting from the detonation of the cord causes the shell (10) to expand and an ignition charge (11) which is disposed between the shell (10) and a rigid capsule (6) to be actuated as a result of sudden compression between the expansion shell and the capsule. The burning ignition charge ignites a delay charge (5), which in turn ignites a priming charge (3), causing a base charge (2) to detonate. The presence of ignition charge in the annular spacing between the shell and capsule walls, as well as between the shell and capsule ends, and the proper positioning of cord-gripping means (15) in shell cavity (13), assure actuation of the ignition charge whether or not the cord is shoved to the bottom of the shell (10).

    improved uniformity of timing, and particularly reduced sensitivity of timing to minor variations in delay charge size, are achieved in delay detonators by placing a loose load of a flame-sensitive ignition composition between a pressed delay charge and an ignition assembly, e.g., a percussion primer, at the actuation end of the detonator. The loose ignition charge has a free surface and is adapted to be ignited in response to direct contact with flame emitted from the ignition of a charge in the ignition assembly. Preferably, the delay charge is pressed into a plastic carrier which, in a non-electric detonator, has an open end terminating between the walls of the detonator shell and a primer shell that closes the actuation end of the detonator, and the ignition charge is loosely loaded into a metal capsule seated against the delay charge.

    A non-electric detonator device having a tubular shell (6) that is closed at its bottom end and containing a base charge (10) of a detonating explosive at the bottom of the shell (6), a priming charge (9) of a heat sensitive detonating explosive composition adjacent to the base charge (10), a rupturable membrane (7) that seals the top end of the shell (6) and forms an open volume (8) between the priming charge (9) and the top end of the shell (6) and a holder (1) for holding a low energy detonating cord (LEDC) (3) in abutting relationship to the membrane (7): whereby on detonation of the LEDC (3) the membrane (7) is ruptured and the priming charge (9) is initiated which in turn initiates the detonating explosive (10).
