An aluminium chloride‐mediated cascade reaction between pyrrolidones and trifluoroacetic anhydride is reported. Functionally diverse 1‐chloro‐2,2,2‐trifluoroethylidene‐substituted pyrrolidones were obtained in moderate to high yields through electrophilic trifluoroacetylation, nucleophilic chlorination, and elimination.
