A new synthesis of pyrrolo[3,2-b]quinolines by a tandem electrocyclization–oxidation process
A newsynthesis of pyrrolo[3,2-b]quinolines is described. Condensation of anilines with dimethyl 4-oxopyrrolidine-1,3-dicarboxylate yields enaminoesters, which upon reaction with Bredereck's reagent produce the title compounds. A possible reaction mechanism is briefly discussed.

Compositions and methods for controlling and/or repelling bedbugs are provided. The compositions comprise one or more compounds having bedbug repellant activity. Such compounds may be, for example, naturally occurring semiochemicals or structural or functional analogs of naturally occurring semiochemicals. Exemplary compounds are compounds of general formula (I).
Optimization of an old route leads very easily, in four steps, to methyl 1,3-dihydro-2H-pyrrolo[3,4-b]quinoline-2-carboxylate in 45% yield from commercial starting materials. This procedure can be compared to recently described methods whose yields were only 23-28% and required five to seven steps from advanced intermediates and chromatographic purifications. Moreover, using this method, the title compound can now be obtained in large quantities.
