A polymeric carbonyl diimidazole derivative of the formula:-
wherein R is the residue of a water soluble polymer of molecular weight 2000 to 10,000, eg. monomethoxy polyethylene glycol, is produced by reacting the polymer at a concentration of 0.15 to 0.35M with carbonyldiimidazole at a concentration ratio of 1:1 to 1:3. A modified superoxide dismutase of the formula:-
R-O--NH-SOD
is produced by reacting said derivative with superoxide dismutase in the presence of a 0.1M to 0.5M concentration of an alkaline buffer having a pH of 9 to 11 at a temperature of 30 to 70oC.
