The invention provides a process for the preparation of N-benzoylcarbamates of general formula
wherein R¹ represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a C₁₋₄ alkyl group, a C₁₋₄ alkoxy group or a trifluoromethyl group, R² represents a halogen atom, a C₁₋₄ alkyl group, a C₁₋₄ alkoxy group or a trifluoromethyl group, R³ represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a methyl group or a trifluoromethyl group, and R represents a C₁₋₈ alkyl group optionally substituted by one or more halogen atoms or a phenyl group optionally substituted by one or more substituents selected from halogen atoms and methyl groups, characterised by reacting an alkali metal salt of a benzamide of general formula
wherein R¹, R² and R³ are as defined above, with a carbonate of formula
RO-CO-OR (III)
wherein R is as defined above, in the presence of an inert solvent, and neutralising the resulting alkali metal salt of the compound of formula I; and (intermediate) alkali metal salts of the compounds of formula I.
