A facile, high-yield synthesis of [Pt2(PR3)2(µ-Cl)2Cl2]

Contrary to previous reports, Zeise's dimer, [Pt-2(eta(2)-C2H4)(2)(mu-Cl)(2)Cl-2], reacts with tertiary phosphines in refluxing toluene or tetrachloroethane to give high yields of the phosphine-substituted analogues [Pt-2(PR(3))(2)(mu-Cl)(2)Cl-2][PR(3) = PMe(3), PMe(2)Ph, PEt(2)Ph, P(C6H11)(2)Ph, PMePh(2), P(C6H11) Ph(2) or PPh(3)]. A wide range of examples has been synthesised and fully characterised by P-31-(H-1) and Pt-195-{1H} spectroscopy.

the carbony complexes are reported together with those from 1H n.m.r. and 1H-31p} and 1H-195Pt} INDOR spectroscopy on the phosphine-containing complexes. The 195Pt chemical shifts of [PtX3(CO)]– from direct measurements are reported. The results are discussed with the assistance of stretching force constants for some of the simpler complexes.
