A dicarboxylic acid having at least 4 carbon atoms between the carboxyl groups, is heated with a dialicyclic diamine having the general formula <;FORM:0619707/IV(a)/1>; where X is zero or an integer from 1 to 6 and R1, R2, R3, R4 are hydrogen atoms or methyl radicals, until the resultant polyamide has an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0.4. Either or both ingredients may be replaced by the corresponding polyamide-forming derivative or the salt-prepared as by mixing ethanol solutions of the corresponding ingredients-may be used. Filaments made from such polyamides have a high resilience, which may be measured by the work recovered when a filament recovers from bending-flexor value-or from stretching. The products obtained when the diamine is a mixture of stereoisomers of the general formula and is liquid at 25 DEG C., are clear and transparent in massive form and soluble in chloroform/methanol mixture. Dialicyclic amines include bi-(p-aminocyclohexyl); di-(p-aminocyclohexyl) methane; 2 : 21-dimethyl-4 : 41-diaminodicyclohexylmethane; 2 : 2 - di - (p - aminocyclohexyl) propane; 1 : 2 - di - (p - aminocyclohexyl) ethane; 1 : 6 - di - (p - aminocyclohexyl) hexane; 1 : 6 - di - (2-methyl-4-aminocyclohexyl) 1 : 1 : 2 : 2 : 3 : 3 : 4 : 4 : 5 : 5 : 6 : 6-dodecamethylhexane and mixtures of stereoisomers thereof; dicarboxylic acids include adipic; suberic; azelaic; sebacic; 4 : 41-biphenylenedicarboxylic acids. In examples: (1) the salt of di-(p-aminocyclohexyl) methane and sebacic acid was heated at atmospheric pressure under nitrogen and then at 2 mm. pressure; (2) and (3) the same salt was heated under different conditions; (4) the salt of bi-(p-aminocyclohexyl) and sebacic acid; (5) the salt of 1 : 2-(p-aminocyclohexyl) ethane and sebacic acid; and (6) the salt of di-(p-aminocyclohexyl) methane and adipic acid was heated to produce a polyamide. The dialicyclic diamines may be prepared by hydrogenating a liquid organic solvent solution of the appropriate diaryl diamines as in Specification 619,706.
