Lithiation of 2-(2-furyl)pyridine with n-butyllithium is dependent upon the nature of the solvent, lithium complexant, and temperature. ω-Lithiation of the furan ring increases with the importance of the solvation of the lithium atom (TMEDA > THF > ether > hexane). The Stetter procedure has been adapted to produce simple 2-furyl- and 2-thienylpyridines and their relatedoligomers, which have been characterised by 13C NMR spectroscopy. σ values for the 2-furyl and 2-thienyl rings have been deduced from the pKa values of the conjugate acids of the 2-furyl- and 2-thienylpyridines.
