A production process by which tertiary phosphine with an attached sterically bulky hydrocarbon group is produced in a high yield and with high purity on an industrial scale through simple and safe operations by allowing a dialkylphosphinous halide to react with a Grignard reagent in the presence of a copper compound in an amount corresponding to 0.1 to 5% by mol based on the dialkylphosphinous halide to produce tertiary phosphine represented by the following formula (3):

The present invention relates to a catalyst for olefin polymerization that contains a metal complex represented by general formula (C1) and a method for producing polyethylene, a copolymer of ethylene and an olefin having a polar group represented by general formula (1), or a copolymer of ethylene, an olefin having a polar group represented by general formula (1) and another monomer, using the aforementioned metal complex as a polymerization catalyst.
(The symbols in the formula are as described in the description.) The metal complex catalyst of the present invention has high heat resistance and catalytic activity. As a result of using this catalyst, olefin-based polymers having a polar group can be produced efficiently that can be used in various applications by copolymerizing a nonpolar olefin (ethylene) and an olefin having a polar group at high temperatures.
