    It was found that alpha-aryl-alpha-diazocarboxylates react with variable regioselectivity in intramolecular rhodium-catalyzed C-H insertion reactions. 3-(Trialkoxysilyl)propyl esters underwent a clean cis-gamma-lactone formation (62-69%) if the aryl rest was a phenyl group while the analogous alpha-(2-bromophenyl)-alpha-diazocarboxylates produced the respective beta-lactones. In general beta-lactone formation was shown to be the only detectable C-H insertion pathway for the latter substrate class irrespective of the ester substituent. The beta-lactone products (eight examples) were obtained in yields of 41-68% with a diastereomeric ratio (dr) of 75:25 to 96:4 in favor of the trans diastereoisomer. The 2-bromo substituent could be displaced by an aryl group in a subsequent Suzuki cross-coupling reaction.

    Process for the preparation of copolymers consisting of 25-85% by wt. of ethylene, 15-75% by wt. of at least one other 1-alkene and optionally up to 20% by wt. of a polyunsaturated compound with application of a catalyst system containing a compound of a metal from sub-groups IV-VI of the periodic system and a compound of a metal from groups I-III of the periodic system, in which at least one hydrocarbon group is bound directly to the metal atom via a carbon atom, the polymerization being carried out in the presence of a halogen-containing compound of the general formula where A is a phenyl group which may contain one or two substituent halogen atoms or alkyl groups, or is a thienyl, furyl, pyrollyl, N-alkylpyrollyl or pyridyl group, which group is bound to the carbon atom directly or via a carbonyl group, X is a chlorine or bromine atom, Y is a chlorine, bromine or hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon group with 1-8 carbon atoms, and Z is a nitrile group, a carboxyl group, an ester group, a hydrocarbyloxyalkylcarboxyl group, an carboxylic acid halide group, an amide group, a benzoyl group, a carboxyphenyl group or a carboxylhydrocarbylphenyl group.

    There are provided (I) a process for producing a copolymer of ethylene, an α-olefin having from 3 to 20 carbon atoms and optionally a polyene, which comprises the step of copolymerizing those monomers in a polymerization reactor by feeding the following components (A), (B), (C1) and (D) to the polymerization reactor: (A) a transition metal complex, (B) an organic aluminum compound, (C1) a halogen-containing compound, and (D) a Lewis base, wherein those components are fed to the polymerization reactor without a preliminary contact of (1) the component (A) with the component (B), (2) the component (A) with the component (C1), (3) the component (B) with the component (C1), and (4) the component (B) with the component (D); and (II) a process for producing said copolymer, which comprises the step of copolymerizing those monomers in a polymerization reactor (i) by feeding to the polymerization reactor the components (A), (B), (D), (C2) a halogen-containing compound, which is a derivative of an aryl group-containing carboxylic acid, and (C3) a halogen-containing compound, which is not a derivative of a carboxylic acid, or (ii) by feeding thereto the components (A), (B), (D), (C3), and (C4) a halogen-containing compound, which is a derivative of a carboxylic acid containing an unsaturated bond-carrying linear organic group.
