ABSTRACT A rapid and general method for the synthesis of symmetrical disulfides involves reaction of sulfur with sodium hydroxide under PTC-microwave irradiation condition to give sodium disulfide, which reacts with alkyl halides to afford the disulfides in good to excellent isolated yields.

Abstract A highly efficient and environmentally friendly method for the imidazole promoted preparation of symmetrical organic disulfides fromBuntesalts is described. This thiol-free procedure produces the desired disulfides even on a large scale by reaction of Buntesalts with imidazole in good to high yields in aqueous media.
A mild and efficient protocol for the synthesis of disulfides in aqueous media using mercaptans promoted by sulfonyl chloride is reported. This reaction offers the advantages of mild reaction conditions, short reaction time, high yields, and simple operation.
