1,2,3-Tri-t-butyl-6,13-pentacenequinone (1a) and 8,9,10-tri-t-butyl-5,14-pentacenequinone (1b) were synthesized. The lowest excited singlet states of both 1a,b bear ππ∗ nature strongly. Correspondingly 1a and 1b undergo photovalence isomerization to give the corresponding valene type isomers. The interconversion between the naphtacenequinones and their valene isomers were reversible photochemically
