    A method for manufacturing polycarbonate by melt-polycondensing bisphenol and carbonic acid diester uses as catalyst an alkali metal compound and/or alkaline earth metal compound (a). The catalyst is added to the bisphenol prior to the melt polycondensation, in an effective amount, i.e., the amount of alkali metal compound and/or alkaline earth metal compound (a) that acts effectively as a catalyst, is contained in said bisphenol, and is controlled to have the same catalytic activity as 1×10 −8 to 1×10 −6 mole of bisphenol disodium salt per mole of pure bisphenol A. The method conducts the reaction efficiently from the initial stage in a stable manner to obtain polycarbonate with good color, good heat stability and color stability during molding and the like.

    A poly(thio)ester (co)polymer which comprises a repeating structural unit represented by the formula (1-A) as an essential structural unit: 1 [wherein R 11 is a divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon group which may contain at least one sulfur atom in a sulfide group; R 12 is a mono- or poly-cyclic aliphatic or aromatic dicarboxylic acid residue; and X 11 and X 12 are each independently an oxygen atom or sulfur atom, and when X 11 and X 12 are the oxygen atoms, R 11 is a divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing at least one sulfur atom in the sulfide group]; and an optical component obtainable by molding the poly(thio)ester (co)polymer. The poly(thio)ester (co)polymer is excellent in transparency and optical characteristics (e.g., a higher refractive index, higher Abbe number, and lower birefringence), and has also good mechanical characteristics and thermal characteristics, and further is excellent in melt fluidity and injection moldability.

Specifically, provided is a method for producing a dialdehyde, including reacting a linear olefinic compound having each of an ethylenic double bond and an aldehyde group on each end of the molecule with carbon monoxide and hydrogen, in the presence of a rhodium catalyst comprised of a bisphosphite represented by General Formula (I) and a rhodium compound, in which the reaction pressure of a mixed gas formed of carbon monoxide and hydrogen is decreased as the reaction proceeds, wherein R represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or an alkoxy group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and W represents an alkylene group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, a cycloalkylene group having 5 to 18 carbon atoms, or an alkylene-arylene group having 7 to 11 carbon atoms, and a rhodium compound.

    A process for the production of a non-linear aldehyde by hydroformylation of an optionally substituted internal olefin comprises: providing a hydroformylation zone containing a charge of a liquid reaction medium having dissolved therein a complex rhodium hydroformylation catalyst comprising rhodium in complex combination with carbon monoxide and with an organic phosphite ligand of the general formula: in which each R represents an optionally substituted hydrocarbyl radical; supplying said olefin to the hydroformylation zone; maintaining temperature and pressure conditions in the hydroformylation zone conducive to hydroformylation of the olefin; supplying make-up hydrogen and carbon monoxide to the hydroformylation zone; recovering from the liquid hydroformylation medium a hydroformylation product comprising at least one aldehyde; and supplying make-up phosphite ligand to the hydroformylation zone at a rate sufficient to maintain a predetermined level of free phosphite ligand in the hydroformylation medium.
