It has been shown that, in the absence of any base, diphenylacetonitrile, cyclohexylphenylacetonitrile and phenylacetonitrile do not react with oxygen. In the presence of a strong base, oxygen is slowly absorbed, and ketones or acids are formed in fair to excellent yields, depending upon the nitrile used.
