A polymeric, phosphorus-containing composition made by heating, in the presence of an initiator, preferably a free radical initiator, and optionally in the presence of one or more comonomers, at least one substituted phosphonylated 2,2′-dihydroxyl-1,1′-binaphthalene or at least one substituted 2,2′-dihydroxyl-1,1′-biphenylene.

vanadium catalyst for enantioselectiveoxidativecoupling of phenols is reported, ultimately resulting in a simple monomeric vanadium species combined with a Brønsted or Lewis acid additive. Reaction of p-cresol with the title catalyst (10 mol %), cesium carbonate, and bromobenzene at 90°C gave 2,2′-dihydroxybiphenyl (51–67%). The reaction was extended to other phenols to provide the corresponding o,o′-dimers (15–59%).
