1,2-Benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one (BIT) is one of the most common chemical biocides in industrial products, with a heterocyclic structure and a wide range of antimicrobialactivity. A copper mediated sulfur–nitrogen coupling reaction for the synthesis of benzo[d]isothiazol-3(2H)-ones and related sulfur–nitrogen heterocycles has been presented, which requires 2-halo-arylamides, sulfur powder, 25–50 mol % of copper iodide/1,10-phenanthroline, and potassium carbonate as base.

A method for protecting a medium from attack by micro-organisms by addition of a biocide containing an aromatic ring carrying a thiocyanate and a carbamoyl group in ortho-relationship to each other. Also claimed is the biocide in which either the ring system or the carbamoyl group carries another substituent. The biocide is parti- oularly useful in aqueous media such as cooling water, paper mill liquor, aqueous oil emulsions and water-based paints or paint films derived therefrom.
