Mn(II)9 grid complexes with a [Mn9(mu-O)12] core, obtained by self-assembly of a series of tritopic picolinic dihydrazone ligands with Mn(II) salts, have been oxidized by both chemical and electrochemical methods to produce mixed oxidation state systems. Examples involving [Mn(III)3Mn(II)6] and [Mn(III)4Mn(II)5] combinations have been produced. Structures are reported for [Mn9(2poap-2H)6](NO3)6.14H2O
A non-homoleptic Cu9 [3×3] mixed ligand grid—structural and magnetic properties

The tritopic hydrazide ligand m2poap (from the reaction of 4-methoxy-2,6-dicarboxylic hydrazide and methyl imino-2-picolinate) reacted with Cu(NO3)(2) to produce a linear trinuclear diazine (N-N) bridged m2poap complex, and a nona-nuclear Cu(II)(9) mixed ligand [3 x 3] grid complex, containing two 4-chloro-2,6-pyridine dicarboxylate (Clpic(2-)) ligands, and four deprotonated m2poap ligands. The presence of Clpic(2-) arises from an impurity in the ligand, which results from hydrolysis of a starting material. Clpic(2-) connects three Cu(II) centers in an unusual oxygen bridged coordination mode. The smaller bite of this ligand leads to a contraction of the grid, compared with homoleptic [3 x 3] grid examples, and results in enhanced ferromagnetic exchange within the grid. The trinuclear complex of m2poap exhibits fairly strong antiferromagentic exchange, typical of N-N bridged systems. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

The present invention provides a novel class of molecular coordination compounds, and more particularly, square supramolecular metal coordination grids of the formula (I): [Ma2(L)2a]Xz (I), wherein M is a transition metal: a is 3, 4, 5 or 6; X is a counterion; z is 2 to 60 and L is as defined in the application. The present invention also provides the use of the square supramolecular metal coordination grids in a binary information recording medium, and a method of forming such a binary information recording medium.
