The present invention is to provide a liquid crystal monomeric compound where a liquid crystal phase readily appears, which is excellent in alignment control, film-formability, durability, heat-stability and compatibility, and is able to be applied to electro-optical liquid crystal elements and recording elements; and a side-chain liquid crystal polymer compound modified with such a monomeric compound. The liquid crystal monomeric compound is represented by the following formula: CH.sub.2 .dbd.CH--(CH.sub.2).sub.m --R [1] wherein m is an integer of 2 to 20 and R is a group selected from the group consisting of ##STR1## wherein p is 1 or 2, Rf is CF.sub.3 or CF.sub.2 F.sub.5, R.sup.1 is an alkyl group having 3-18 carbon atoms, * means an optically active carbon atom, (A) and (B) each is a group independently selected from the group consisting of ##STR2## which may be substituted with one or more halogen atoms, and X is --O--, --COO--or a direct linkage, and ##STR3## wherein p, Rf, R.sup.1, (A), (B), X and * have the same meanings as above.
