  A reductive coupling reaction was effectively developed to convert an aldehyde to its symmetrical ether. The successful reactions required Et3SiH and CH2Cl2 as the suitable solvent in the presence of a catalytic amount of In(OTf)(3).   Arylaldehyde acetals can be reacted with trimethyl phosphite to produce the corresponding dimethyl α-methoxybenzylphosphonates, themselves used in a Wadsworth–Emmons reaction with adamantanone to produce hindered methyl vinyl ethers. These vinyl ethers are useful in the preparation of chemiluminescent 1,2-dioxetanes. The scope of the reaction has been explored.

  to afford 1,2-dihydropyrrolo[3,4-b]indol-3(4H)-ones. An efficient combination of B(C6F5)3 and NaBH4 was developed for direct reductive amination of aldehydes. In addition, B(C6F5)3 catalyzed tandem amination–amidation of 3-formyl-indole-2-carboxylic acids with different substituted anilines to afford substituted 1,2-dihydropyrrolo[3,4-b]indol-3(4H)-ones.
