Synthesis of Highly Functionalized 3-(3-Pyridyl)pyrrolidine and 3-(3-Pyridyl)pyrroles

Highly functionalized 3-(3-pyridyl)pyrrolidines can be readily prepared via a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction between 3-cyanomethyl-4-phenyl-1,3-oxazolidine (1) and methyl 3-(3-pyridyl)-acrylate (2) or 3-(2-nitroethenyl)pyridine (3). The stereochemistry of the cycloadducts has been studied and their conversion into 3-(3-pyridyl)pyrrole was readily achieved.
