by excitation of the iron(III) aquacomplex [Fe(H(2)O)OH](2+) and hydrogenperoxide at pH 3.5. Three different sulfonylureas were studied: metsulfuron methyl, cinosulfuron and thifensulfuron methyl. are useful to mitigate damage to crops caused by sulfonylurea herbicides. The compounds may be applied in various ways, e.g. in admixture with the herbicide or as a dressing on the crop seed.
The novel compounds may be made by reacting the appropriate benzenesulfonyl orthiophenesulfonyl isocyanate with an appropriate amine or alcohol.

The preparation and use of nucleic acid promoter fragments derived from several genes from corn, petunia and tobacco which are highly responsive to a number of substituted benzenesulfonamides and related compounds are described. These promoter fragments are useful in creating recombinant DNA constructions comprising nucleic acid sequences encoding any desired gene product operably linked to such promoter fragments which can be utilized to transform plants and bring the expression of the gene product under external chemical control in various tissues of monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plant.
