  Compounds of the formula wherein T is oxygen or sulfur; and Y is H or Cl. The compounds are useful as intermediates for the preparation of herbicides, and are prepared by condensing a salt of 4-methoxy or of 4-mercaptophenol with a trifluormethyl-2-chloropyridine. If a methoxy group is present, a dealkylation reaction is then carried out.
