In the cyclic monoterpenes, the base-catalysed epoxidation1 of endocyclic double bonds which are in conjugation with carbonyl groups follows a highly stereoselective course resulting in a single epimer. Exocyclic double bonds are attacked from both sides in this reaction.

The present invention relates to antimicrobial oral compositions comprising a water-soluble zinc salt wherein a surfactant selected from alkali metal or ammonium salts of alkyl sulfoacetate, dialkyl sulfosuccinate, dialkyl sulfosuccinamate; and mixtures thereof; is used in an amount effective to reduce the astringency of the zinc salt.
The present invention relates to an oral composition comprising, in an orally acceptable carrier, from 0.1% to 5% zinc oxide; and from 0.1% to 5% of a source of carbonate ions selected from alkali metal and ammonium carbonates and bicarbonates. The molar ratio of carbonate ion to zinc ion is from 0.05:1 to 1:1. The composition has good antiplaque efficacy and taste. Preferred compositions are toothpastes.
The present invention relates to a dentifrice composition comprising:
a) a polyphosphate salt in particulate form, the polyphosphate salt comprising a polyphosphate anion comprising at least 10 phosphate units; and
b) an orally acceptable carrier;
characterised in that the polyphosphate salt has a particle size distribution wherein less than 10% by volume of the salt has a particle size of greater than 160 µm and less than 20% by volume of the salt has a particle size of less than 20 µm. The dentifrice composition has good stability and acceptable mouth feel.
The invention further relates to orally acceptable polyphosphate salts for use in such compositions.
