  An aromatic hydrocarbon represented by the following general formula [I]: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 stand for a hydrogen atom or alkyl group, is reacted with a halogenated sulfonic acid in the presence of a Lewis acid to obtain an aromatic sulfone compound represented by the following general formula [II]: ##STR2## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are as defined above and Z stands for a halogen atom or an aromatic hydrocarbon group represented by the following general formula [III]: ##STR3## in which R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are as defined above.
