oxadiborepins and the first azadiborepins attained via a modular synthesis route are presented. The new compounds emit intense blue light, some of which demonstrate fluorescence quantum yields close to unity. An efficient transformation of the sulfur atoms to the sulfonyl group in a range of thienopyrroles was achieved by using the HOF·CH3CN complex. Mild conditions, high yields, and easy purification are the main features of this novel route. Most new materials exhibit considerable red-shift absorptions in the UV/visible range relative to the parent compounds.

A new approach to the synthesis of dithienothiophene was developed, and 1,2-bis(2,6-dimethyldithieno[3,2-b;2,'3'-d]thiophen-3-yl)hexafluorocyclopent-1-ene was prepared. The latter compound is the first representative of photochromic dihetarylethenes with the fused tricyclic fragments linked through the perfluorocyclene bridge.
