A method of making a selective hydrogenation catalyst comprising contacting a support with a palladium-containing compound to form a palladium supported composition, contacting the palladium supported composition with an organophosphorus compound to form a catalyst precursor, and reducing the catalyst precursor to form the catalyst. A method of selectively hydrogenating highly unsaturated hydrocarbons to an unsaturated hydrocarbon enriched composition comprising contacting a supported catalyst comprising palladium and an organophosphorous compound with a feed comprising highly unsaturated hydrocarbon under conditions suitable for hydrogenating at least a portion of the highly unsaturated hydrocarbon feed to form the unsaturated hydrocarbon enriched composition.

    A process for preparing single enantiomers of chiral sulphoxides is provided. The process involves (a) reacting an achiral sulphide, e.g. a disulphide, with a single enantiomer of a chiral template having the formula T-(CO)-CH2R1, wherein T is suitably (eta5-C5H5)Fe(CO)(PPh3)- (Ph = phenyl) and (b) thereafter stereospecifically oxidising the sulphur atom with an oxidising agent. A single enantiomer of the chiral sulphoxide can then be generated by reacting the oxidised product with a carbanion. In a preferred embodiment the reaction mixture is thereafter treated with further achiral sulphide to provide a process which is catalytic on the chiral template.

    Compounds having the general formula: wherein (i) Cp is either a cyclopentadienyl ligand having the formula C₅(R³)₅ where the R³ groups are independently hydrogen, methyl or ethyl or an indenyl ligand; (ii) Z is a ligand having the formula X(R⁴)₂(Y) wherein X is selected from phosphorus, arsenic or antimony; the R⁴ groups are independently aryl or aroxy and Y is selected from -R⁵ -NHR⁵ and -OR⁵ wherein R⁵ is a hydrocarbyl group; (iii) the R groups are independently hydrogen, halogen or C₁ to C₄ alkyl; (iv) R¹ is selected from hydrogen, C₁ to C₆ alkyl, benzyl and -CO₂R⁶ where R⁶ is C₁ to C₆ alkyl; (v) R² is selected from hydrogen, C₁ to C₁₀ alkyl, phenyl and benzyl, and (vi) B is either R or COY wherein Y is selected from -NHR⁷, -OR⁷ and -SR⁷ where R⁷ is a hydrocarbyl group is provided. The compounds are efficient asymmetric hydrogenating agents for prochiral carbonyl containing compounds when used in single enantiomer form.

    A polyester resin composition for profile extrusion molding comprising an amorphous polyester, at least one component selected from the group consisting of a crystalline polyester and a nucleating agent, and optionally a reactive compound; a polyester resin composition for profile extrusion molding comprising a polyester resin, and a reactive compound having a weight average molecular weight of 200 to 500,000; and a profile shape comprising a resin having a reduced viscosity ratio of 1.01 to 3.00, a reduced viscosity ratio being a ratio of a reduced viscosity of a resin after molding to that of a resin before molding. They do not suffer from sagging in the molding process, they improve the shape accuracy at corners and edges of profile shapes from a die to a sizing step and also resistance to whitening on bending in transparent products, and can provide profile shapes having good solvent resistance and detergent resistance.
