4-Fluorosalicylic acid derivatives represented by general formula (1) and a process for producing the same, wherein X1, X2, and X3 each independently represents hydrogen or halogeno, exclusive of the case where all of X1, X2, and X3 are hydrogen or fluorine at the same time. The 4-fluorosalicylic acid derivatives are novel compounds not found in the literature. They can be easily converted to 3-fluorophenol derivatives extremely useful as liquid crystals, recording materials, and intermediates for drugs and agricultural chemicals. They are highly suitable for use as intermediates for the 3-fluorophenol derivatives.
