A general route to 2- or 2,2-substituted vinyldiphenylphosphine oxides or allyldiphenylphosphine oxides from ketones (or benzaldehyde) and the anion of methyldiphenylphosphine oxide is reported. The initially formed 2-hydroxyalkyldiphenylphosphine oxide is converted into the olefinic phosphine oxide via the O-trimethylsilyl derivative (Method A) or, directly, with thionyl chloride/pyridine (Method B). Allyldiphenylphosphine oxides were formed when methyl ketones were employed; the reaction of diaryl ketones or benzaldehyde yielded the vinyldiphenylphosphine oxides.
