A rare Ru-catalyzed highly selective synthesis of 3,4-dihydroisoquinolines or isoquinolines is accomplished via a redox-divergent hydrogen-retentive or hydrogen-releasing fashion. Notably, high cis-selectivity of 3,4-dihydroisoquinolines is achieved.
