Ruthenium-catalyzed [2 + 2] cycloadditions of bicyclic alkenes with alkynyl phosphonates were investigated. The phosphonate moieties were found to be compatible with the Ru-catalyzed cycloadditions giving the corresponding cyclobutene cycloadducts in low to excellent yield (up to 96%).
