    The present invention is to provide the compounds useful as a treating or preventing agent for gout and hyperuricemia which are 2-phenylnicotinic acid derivatives having a uric acid lowering action due to an excellent xanthine oxidase inhibitory action. Since the 2-phenylnicotinic acid derivatives of the present invention exhibit a uric acid lowering action due to an excellent xanthine oxidase inhibitory action and also hypolipemic action, their utility is very high as a treating or preventive agent for gout and hyperuricemia which are often accompanied by hyperlipemia as a complication.

    The synthesis and biological evaluation of a series of diphenyl ether derivatives were described. The compounds can either activate or inhibit the aminopeptidase activity of leukotriene A(4) hydrolase, while at the same time do not influence the hydrolase activity. Further enzyme kinetics and molecular modeling investigation on these novel chemical activators revealed their possible activation mechanism. These compounds can be used as probes to regulate the aminopeptidase activity of leukotriene A4 hydrolase. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) with a variety of oxidants promote the Mitsunobu-type coupling reactions of alcohols with phenols, carboxylic acids, and phthalimide. Experiments using a chiral alcohol indicate that these reactions proceed via SN1 or SN2 pathways depending on the polarity of the used solvents. The NHCs are consumed as reducing reagents to form their oxides as readily separable byproducts
