    A polyphenylene ether resin composition containing (A) a polyphenylene ether resin, (B) an aromatic polyester resin, and (C) a phenoxy resin. The resin composition may further contain (D) an unsaturated carboxylic acid and/or (E) a vinyl copolymer derived from a styrene compound and an alpha, beta-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride as comonomer components. The resin composition has excellent mechanical strength, solvent resistance, oil resistance and moldability.

    Thermoplastic resin composition comprising the following components A and B is presented which improves the compatibility of component resins, to achieve a thermoplastic resin having excellent molding property and mechanical strength: A. 90 to 10 wt% of a polyolefin resin containing a substituted silyl group represented by general formula; -SiRnY₃-n (wherein, R is aliphatic hydrocarbon group; Y is hydrolyzable group or hydroxyl group; n represents 0, 1 or 2), and B. 10 to 90 wt% of saturated polyester resin or hydroxyalkylated polycarbonate resin or hydroxyalkylated polyphenylene ether resin.

    A thermoplastic resin composition comprising (A) from about 10 to about 90% by weight of a hydroxyalkylated polyphenylene ether represented by formula (I): wherein A represents a residue of a polyphenylene ether from which a hydroxyl group is removed; and n represents an integer of from 1 to 10, and (B) from about 10 to about 90% by weight of a resin selected from a carboxyl-containing olefin resin, an epoxy-containing olefin resin, a hydroxyl-containing olefin resin, a polyamide resin, and a saturated polyester resin, provided that when (B) is the olefin resin, the hydroxyalkylated polyphenylene ether also can be represented by formula (II): werein A is defined as above; X represents an oxygen atom or a nitrogen atom; R1 represents an alkylene group having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms; R2 and R3 each represents a hydrocarbon group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms; s represents 1 when X is an oxygen atom, or 2 when X is a nitrogen atom; and t represents an integer of from 1 to 3.

    A hydroxy-substituted poly(phenylene ether) resin can be produced by copolymerizing from 1.5 to 8 mol% of a phenol compound selected from those represented by the following formulae (a), (b), (c), (d), and (e): and from 98.5 to 92 mol% of a phenol compound of the following formula (f): The hydroxy-substituted poly(phenylene ether) resin shows excellent compatibility with a polyamide, a polycarbonate, a poly(butylene terephthalate), a poly-(phenylene sulfide), and is useful as a copatibilizer or a modified resin for engineering plastics.
