A first reported method for preparation of a new class of thioglycosides via reaction of piperidinium salts of dihydropyridinethiones with 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-alpha-D-gluco- and galactopyranosyl bromides has been studied. Comparison with the products obtained from silylated thiopyridines is made.

reacts with ethyl acetoacetate and acetylacetone to give the corresponding 3-cyano-2(1H)-pyridinethione derivatives, which can be alkylated at sulfur atom and cyclized into the corresponding thieno[2,3-b]pyridine derivatives.
