    Dopamine agonist compounds useful in the treatment of hypertension and congestive heart failure in mammals are disclosed. The dopamine agonist compounds include racemic and non-racemic mixtures of chiral compounds as well as optically pure R,R; R,S and S,S stereoisomers which are all intended to be schematically described by the following general formula (I) wherein: R₁ is independently hydrogen, lower alkyl, -C(O)R₃, or -C(O)NR₃R₄, wherein R₃ and R₄ are independently lower alkyl, optionally substituted phenyl or phenyl lower alkyl; R₂ is hydrogen or lower alkyl-, X is -(CH₂)m- or -(CH₂)nY(CH₂)n-, where m is an integer from 1 to 10, n is an integer of 1 to 3, and Y is oxygen or sulfur; All of R₁, and R₂ are most preferably hydrogen, X is most preferably -(CH₂)m- and the preferred optically pure R stereoisomer (most preferably R,R stereoisomer) of the dopamine agonist is preferably in the form of a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, preferably included in a dosage form with a suitable carrier.

  • Apparatus for continuously monitoring a plurality of chemical analytes through a single optical fiber and method of making

    A CO₂/O₂ or pH/O₂ gas sensor (10) comprising a single optical fiber (11) and a method for making the same. The optical fiber carries light signals at different wavelengths for monitoring either CO₂ concentration or pH level, in combination with O₂ concentration. Attached to the distal end (23) of the fiber-optic probe is a cylindrical pellet (17) that has one surface (25) covered by a light reflective material (gold foil (15)) and the other surface attached adjacent to the distal end of the optical fiber. Depending on whether the sensor is to monitor either CO₂ or pH, the pellet comprises either a CO₂ analyte indicator molecule or a pH analyte indicator molecule covalently bonded to a polymer matrix material. Also adjacent to the distal end of the optical fiber is disposed a second polymer matrix material which is codissolved with an O₂ analyte reactive indicator molecule (19). The second polymer matrix material is either interposed between the cylindrical pellet and the distal end of the optical fiber or surrounds the cylindrical pellet. If pH is being measured, the distal end of the optical fiber is coated with a hydrophilic material that is permeable to water. Conversely, if CO₂ is being monitored, the distal end is coated with a hydrophobic material.

    A bundle of fiber-optic sensors that resist breakage, for use in measuring pH, CO₂, and O₂ concentration, and a method of making the same. Three optical fibers (15,17,19) are enclosed in a common polyimide sheath (13) and extend parallel to one another toward a distal end of the sensor, where they are bonded together in a mutually supportive array. At the distal end of one of these optical fibers is disposed a pellet (21) comprising a CO₂ analyte indicator molecule codissolved within a polymer matrix (22). A thin reflective surface of gold foil (20) is provided on the pellet such that incident light transmitted through the optical fiber and polymer matrix is reflected back into the optical fiber. The CO₂ polymer matrix absorbs light of a given wavelength to an extent dependent upon the level of CO₂ present. Similarly, on the distal end of a second optical fiber is disposed a pH pellet (25) comprising a pH analyte indicator matrix with a thin reflective gold foil (24) attached for reflecting light that has passed through the pH analyte indicator matrix back into the optical fiber. The pH analyte indicator matrix absorbs light of a given wavelength to an extent dependent upon the hydrogen ion concentration (pH level) of a surrounding fluid. The third optical fiber is used for measuring oxygen concentration. An O₂ indicator matrix (27) covers the distal ends of at least two of the three optical fibers; however, at least a portion of the pH optical fiber and the pH pellet are free of the O₂ indicator matrix, which is hydrophobic. The oxygen indicator matrix phosphoresces for an interval of time that decreases in proportion to the surrounding oxygen gas concentration. The phosphorescent and reflected light signals are transmitted to light detectors through the optical fibers for comparison to reference signals, so that the analyte concentrations can be determined.
