respectively. Reaction of adenosine with 13C-3-labeled MCF was employed to elucidate the mechanism of formation of I. It was found that the product was formed by a nucleophilic attack of the exocyclicaminogroup in adenosine on the carbon in the 4-methyl group of MCF. These adducts appear to be novel and not structurally related to those previously identified in the reaction of adenosine with mucochloric acid

An improved procedure for the synthesis of chlorinated 5-hydroxy-4-methyl-2(5H)-furanones is described. By this method also carbon-labelled (C-13 and C-14 at C-3) hydroxyfuranones, including mucochloric acid can be prepared. Each step of the method was examined in an effort to optimize both the yield and the purity of the compounds.
