Two secondaryamides (N-methylacetamide and 2-pyrrolidinone) were used as additives with SmI2 in THF to estimate the extent of N–H bond weakening upon coordination. Mechanistic and synthetic studies demonstrate significant bond-weakening, providing a reagent system capable of reducing a range of substrates through formal hydrogen atom transfer.

It was demonstrated that alcohols are critical for the formation of a thermodynamically more powerful reductant from TmI2 (thulium diiodide), the first nonclassical lanthanide(II) iodide in the series (TmI2, DyI2, NdI2). The TmI2(ROH)n reagent promotes an unprecedented cleavage of the σ CNbond in amides.

A variety of C–Cmultiplebonds conjugated with aromatic rings are smoothly reduced by the PhYbI/MeOH or Yb/MeOH systems under very mild conditions to give the corresponding saturated products in excellent yields. This reaction provides a novel convenient method for reduction of multiplebonds conjugated with aromatic rings.
